To score three tricks, any 3-2 break will do. The
problem is when the suit is 4-1 or 5-0. Start
by taking a finesse of the 8, 9 or 10 in either
direction.

If you begin with low to the 9 or 10, losing the
trick on your left, next cash the ace.

If you begin with the 9 or 10, losing on your
right to the jack or queen, next cash the king.

This technique loses only to a 4-1 split (in one
direction) with a singleton honor.

breaks 4-1, the
singleton is more
likely to be a small
card than the
queen or jack.
It's 3 to 2 odds,
to be exact.
