You need two spade tricks. If you win the diamond
lead and play the queen of spades. It goes
low-low-low. Now you play the 9 of spades and
maybe you'll guess right, if West has an honor.

Instead, first knock out the card that they can't
duck! Run the nine. If someone wins with the ace,
you have two tricks; if someone wins with the jack,
you can next play the queen and overtake with the
king. If the 9 wins the first spade trick, lead the
queen next and you have two tricks.
