Opening
lead: 3
On
this hand, from a Bermuda Bowl, Lew Mathe, my
partner,
stuck to his guns by not leading a trump
(as was his rule
for his partners). At the other table
a trump was led (it's
the sort of lead no one can
blame West for); declarer drew
trumps and finessed
clubs, then ruffed out the king to
score 650.
At
our table, Mathe led the 3. Declarer played the
king. I
won the ace, led a heart back to partner, and
he switched
to a diamond to my king. I tapped dummy
in hearts at trick
four. Now declarer could have made
the hand but the winning
line wasn't clear. He cashed
the ace of clubs, ruffed a club,
and ruffed his last heart.
On this trick, Mathe threw his
king of clubs and now
declarer could not get off dummy without
establishing
a trump trick for my partner.
My
tip is this: When you have a nice holding for
declarer
in dummy's side suit, make an attacking lead. |
