Jack Dreyfus is a remarkable man. He is probably most famous for his Dreyfus Fund. But his lifelong ambition has been to promote the drug, Dilantin, as a cure for hundreds of ailments. His promotional work is purely non-profit, and he has spent 40 years and millions of dollars in the effort. He discovered the drug 50 years ago when he went into a state of depression, and Dilantin cured him. Now at the age of 92 he still goes to his office every day, at the Dreyfus Medical Foundation, and works on new ways to tell doctors and the public about the benefits of Dilantin. His latest book is entitled, Written in Frustration. His previous best-seller is A Remarkable Medicine is Overlooked. Jack Dreyfus in his day was probably the best gin rummy player in the world. He once won a professional tennis tournament as well, even though he was an amateur. The game Dreyfus has loved the most, however, is bridge. He was West on this hand from a rubber bridge game a few years ago and made a remarkable lead. Pity poor declarer, Paul Trent, a champion player from New York. He thought the lead must be from Q-J. If it was from Q-J-2, Trent could make his slam by playing low from dummy. That's just what he did, but then Dreyfus cashed the ace of clubs and set the contract. Nice lead, Mr. Dreyfus! |
